Fighting for a world free of poverty and injustice

At a national level, Christian Aid Week this year tells the story of change within a community in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is a place with vast resources of fertile land and mineral wealth, but in spite of this abundance, its turbulent past has left the country with deep challenges.

At a local level there are a number of events taking place in Dorchester in and around Christian Aid Week, 13-19 May which you might like to support.

Saturday 12 May- Coffee morning at St. Peter’s Church, 10.00 – 12.00

Sunday 13 May – The Olympicnics – in the Borough Gardens (Dorford Church if wet). 12.30 – 1.30pm Picnics, 1.30 – 3.00 Christian Aid Road Show with Martin Nicholas

Monday 14 – Saturday 19 May House to house collections

Wednesday 18 May – Christian Aid Market and Coffee Morning. Dorchester United Church Hall, 9.45am to 1.45 pm. Stalls, Coffee and Lunches.

Saturday 21 May at 9.30 am – Sponsored Walk to the River Jordan departing North Square. Complete walk is 18 miles, or any of the three 6 mile sections can be walked on its own.

Over the next couple of months, there is a feast of events in the Melbury Team: Dorset Knob Throwing, Maiden Newton at War, Impact lunch with Fiona Castle on 10th May at Melbury house, Jubilee celebrations, Country Fairs, Open Gardens, Concerts, fetes, Olympic events, Flower festivals etc.  So many people are giving huge amounts of time and energy to organise and run these events because they are dedicated to our communities and churches. We do hope you will come along and join in with many of these events. And when you do, you might spare a thought for those working hard behind the scenes and show your gratitude to them for making this such a wonderful place to live.

Billy Graham says: ‘The Bible is concerned only incidentally with the history of Israel or a system of ethics. It’s concerned primarily with the story of redemption as it is in Jesus Christ. If you read the Scriptures and miss the story of salvation, you have missed its message and meaning. There have been those who have gone through the Bible and traced the story of Jesus: In Genesis He is the seed of the woman. In Exodus He is the Passover Lamb. In Leviticus He is the Atoning Sacrifice. In Numbers He is the Smitten Rock. In Deuteronomy He is the Greatest Prophet. In Joshua He is the Captain of the Lord’s Host. In Judges He is the Deliverer. In Kings He is the Promised King. In Nehemiah He is the Restorer of the Nation. In Esther He is the Advocate. In Job He is my Redeemer. In Psalms He is my Shepherd. In Proverbs He is my Pattern. In Ecclesiastes He is my Goal. In the Song of Solomon He is my Satisfier. In the Books of the Prophets He is my Coming Prince of Peace. In the Gospels He is the One who came to seek and to save us. In Acts He is our Risen Lord. In the Epistles He is our Representative at the Father’s right hand. In Revelation He is our Returning Lord.’ In an age of pop psychology and eclectic theology, the bedrock of our faith is still Christ’s virgin birth, His sinless life, His atoning death, His victorious resurrection, His mediatorial work, and His visible return as King of Kings. Christ-there’s no one like Him!

This is the most important festival for Christians, on which our faith is based. We hope you will read David Harknett’s excellent ‘Pause for Thought’, and that it might inspire you to come and celebrate with us during this season. To all the churches who were able to pay their Diocesan Share in full this year. [The Diocesan Share is the money each church gives annually to Salisbury. This then provides clergy to be available to every person in every part of this diocese.] Nearly every church in the Melbury Team had paid its share in full by the end of 2011. This is a tribute to the hard work, imagination and generosity of those who support and maintain the churches in this area.  All of us, and perhaps especially those who do not regularly come to worship, owe a debt of gratitude to those who serve God in this way.  The church is for the whole community, not just a few, but those who work so hard and give so generously deserve the thanks of the community for their dedication.
